I worked a short time as a psychiatric social worker and then trained and worked as a psychotherapist for 22 years. At this point I came across Dr. Joshua David Stone`s work and the I Am University. This changed the way I worked and so I now describe myself as a spiritual counsellor and educator.
This work is essentially focussed on re-education. The majority of us have difficulty with owning our personal power and have self-love and self-worth issues too. We are beginning to understand that healing comes through the mind and this is empowering us to know what it means to take responsibility for ourselves and for how our lives are going.
We have been indulging the emotional body, giving it too much power, even giving our power away to the emotional body. This is evident in the way so many experience life like a roller coaster of constant ups and downs, as if they are powerless to change this and take charge. It is evident too in the great number of TV programmes that are all "drama".
We have grown up with a great many beliefs and attitudes that don`t serve us and in fact create a lot of pain and suffering. We just aren`t conscious that there are ways to work with these old beliefs and attitudes that will empower us to change them and take on beliefs and attitudes that are positive and enhancing for all.
We are not victims though for most of the time this is what we think we are or we act as if we are. We can learn to take charge of ourselves and how we respond. We can choose the attitude we take to any event or happening in our lives.
Everything in life is a challenge, a lesson and an opportunity to grow.
We always have a choice in every situation. We have the choice to think or react negatively to an experience or to think and respond in a positive/spiritual way. There really are only two ways of thinking – negatively or in a positive/spiritual way. The basic law of the mind is that it is your thoughts that create your reality. Your feelings, your behaviour and what you attract and magnetise into your life all come from your thoughts.
Ideas and teachings like these have made such a difference in my own life and in my work with others. This kind of re-education puts us back at the helm of our ship, in charge and clear about the direction we wish to take and the shape we wish to put on our lives.
I do some individual work but my main focus is on work with groups as working together and sharing deepens a person`s understanding of the teachings and how to work with them. This approach does take commitment and steady, consistent work but it`s worth every effort because the vision and goal of this work is to understand how, in truth, you are the captain of your ship and to take charge of who you are and where you are going and how you are experiencing your life.
